Details This case study details the use of waste vegetable oil (WVO) as an alternative fuel in a conventional diesel vehicle in Japan. Over 18 years and 200,000 kilometres, the vehicle operated on filtered WVO sourced from local restaurants. Modifications enabled reliable year-round use, though winter performance and fuel quality initially create challenges. Data collected over a seven-year period showed comparable efficiency to diesel and highlighted key maintenance and environmental factors. While not easily scalable, WVO offers a low-cost, low-carbon solution for individuals seeking energy independence. The findings highlight the potential of grassroots, localized fuels as transitional tools in sustainable transportation.
