Details Francisca Navarro, a playwright about whom little is known, published most of her dramatic works between 1828 and 1829. In these plays she defended equality between men and women and demonstrated a deep knowledge of the theatre of her time. This paper analyzes two of her comedies from 1829, El ajuste de la bolera o Una intriga en el teatro and Mi retrato y el de mi compadre, both of which are metatheatrical in nature. Through these works, the study examines the state of dramaturgy during the Ominous Decade (1823–1833), with particular attention to the position of women within the professional theatrical sphere.
