Details | UKYO VOICES: A 90th Anniversary Community Engagement Project
The overall concept of this project was to forge a better understanding between the KUFS community and the people of the Kyoto city ward of Ukyo-ku, where our university is based, in support of celebrations of their 90th anniversary. Students, teachers and personnel from all areas of KUFS came together to complete the project in collaboration with both Kyoto City and the citizens and personnel from Ukyo-ku local offices, organizations and community groups. The student project team consisted of six pairs of interviewers, who conducted two interviews per pair, two website developers, and two photographers. The faculty and administration project team of around seven or eight members were positioned to provide logistical support and advice throughout the process, but tried to allow the students as much autonomy as possible in regard to interactions with interviewees and producing the results of their activities. Interviews took place with six representatives from local community groups, organizations, and the business world, with a further six interviews with members of the local community across all generations. The results were organized and formatted into a specially built bilingual English and Japanese website, which was promoted both locally and further afield. Overall, this initiative allowed both sides to engage with each other and share thoughts and ideas for the mutual benefit of all, with some very interesting connections made along the way. Due to this, we consider it to be a successful university-community engagement activity, in the truest sense. Keywords: community engagement, Ukyo ward, KUFS, bilingual, website |
