Details | Translation has been considered as interference for language acquisition mainly due to the belief in L2 monolingualism in the language teaching community. However, translation in language teaching (TILT) has been gaining attention as an effective approach to help learners improve their L2 competence. The presenter has been assigning an out-of-class TILT activity, named MTD (My Translation Database) to EFL learners at a university in Japan since 2018, which has consistently received positive responses from the learners. MTD is an L1-L2 corpus created by learners collecting L1 (translation) - L2 (original) equivalent pairs selected by learners themselves from authentic data sources, such as movies and dramas. All the learners in one class create their sheet on the same cloud-shared spreadsheet, so each student’s work is visible and shared with their classmates. According to their work and comments on the spreadsheet and the result of the post-activity survey, this out-of-class activity has proved to be effective in possibly raising motivation and helping their attitude toward autonomous learning. This is due to certain aspects, including self-determination, interest in authentic materials, co-learning by sharing, and visualization of the learning process. |
