Details	This exploratory study attempted to understand the challenges EAL learners face with reading. We assessed 78 subjects (54 EAL, 24 FLE) receiving secondary education at two international schools in Japan based on four factors: vocabulary knowledge, word decoding ability, reading comprehension, and general language ability. Multiple regression analysis results showed that vocabulary and decoding ability were predictors of reading comprehension for the overall subject group. However, when examining only the EAL subjects, the only predictor of reading comprehension was vocabulary knowledge.
