| Details | The opening portion of the presentation describes an initial investigation that assessed learners on four measures: vocabulary knowledge (Updated Vocabulary Levels Test (uVLT); Webb et al., 2017), word decoding ability (Single Word Reading Test (SWRT); Snowling et al., 2009), reading comprehension (York Assessment of Reading Comprehension (YARC); Snowling et al., 2009), and general language proficiency (C-test; Eckes & Grotjahn, 2006; Trakulphadetkrai et al., 2017). This analysis showed that across all three groups, vocabulary was the only statistically significant predictor of academic achievement. The next stage outlines the steps currently being taken to create an EAL-specific corpus and EAL word list. This includes an explanation of text selection and an overview of procedures for analyzing and identifying high-frequency words in texts (based on Coxhead, 2000 and Greene, 2008). |
