Details	This study examined 31 learners (17 EAL, 14 FLE) studying at an international school in Japan. Four factors known to influence reading comprehension (e.g., Geva & Zadhe, 2006) were investigated using previously validated tools: vocabulary knowledge (nVLT, McLean & Kramer, 2015), word decoding (SWRT, Snowling et al. 2009), fluency (YARC fluency passages; Snowling et al. 2009), and general language proficiency (C-test; Eckes & Grotjahn, 2006; Trakulphadetkrai et al. 2017). These assessment results were compared with reading comprehension measures (accuracy, comprehension) assessed using YARC. When EAL participants were examined separately from FLE learners, vocabulary knowledge was the only statistically significant predictor of reading comprehension.
