Details Building on previous research, this study seeks to clarify the extent to which lexical richness is a product of learners' linguistic ability, in contrast to writing ability. To this end, researchers investigated the relationship between first-year students' (N=62) L2 vocabulary size (measured by McLean & Kramer (2015) New Vocabulary Levels Test (nVLT)) and the lexical diversity of academic papers in both L1 and L2. Lexical diversity was measured using both type/token ratio (TTR; Laufer & Nation, 1995) and Guiraud Index (GI; Milton, 2009). These results were compared with students' L2 writing lexical diversity.
