Details	By gaining a deeper understanding of students’ first and second language writing backgrounds, teachers can plan writing classes that better meet learners’ needs (McKay, 1993). This study examines the experiences, perceptions, and practices of eight university students studying English at a university in the Kansai region. Using semi-structured interviews, the researcher asked students to talk about their writing backgrounds and to describe how they currently write.
