Details	This presentation examines how first-year Japanese university students organize their ideas in English academic writing tasks, comparing this with the rhetorical styles they use in Japanese and exploring the reasons behind these differences. It then considers how such differences can inform teachers’ decisions about what to focus on in the classroom to help students improve their English writing.
