Details	This presentation explores how students can make use of their existing L1 academic writing knowledge to produce better writing in English. By examining more than 100 writing samples collected from 53 first-year university students in an English program in Japan, the study focuses on the similarities and differences in rhetorical structure found in their L1 and L2 compositions.
