Details	Using rubrics in academic writing classes presents several clear drawbacks. Rubrics can unfairly penalize students for creativity while also categorizing them into groups. This study examines several issues related to the use of rubrics in university EAP classes. It further proposes alternative approaches to assessing student writing, addressing a broader question of how best to create an environment that supports second language learning.
