事項 Teaching Writing through the 3 connecting Words and 4 Sentence Types Before Paragraphs and Essays
概要 Students are taught how to write compound, complex and compound-complex sentences before moving on to paragraphs and essays in order to avoid common mistakes such as run-on sentences, sentence fragments, beginning a sentence with a coordinating conjunction and other common mistakes. After learning this skill, students write these sentences while I check them for mistakes, and this *dramatically* improves the paragraphs and essays that they can write. For example: "I go to Tokyo. I buy clothes there." Students learn to write this in other ways: "I go to Tokyo, and I buy clothes there." OR "I go to Tokyo. In addition, I buy clothes there." Or "After I go to Tokyo, I buy clothes." Although these three sentences have slightly different meanings, students can learn how to apply the connecting words "and", "in addition" and "after" to produce varied sentences like a color palette for artists.
