Details | Pres. Duterte of the Philippines may be coarse and controversial in his remarks. There were precedents in Sukarno of Indonesia and Mahatir of Malaysia. But, whatever their rhetoric, Japan was always there as an unwavering friend to provide signposts for them, including Duterte. This makes it possible for Duterte and the Philippines as a small state to use somewhat coarse rhetoric against major Western powers and to take advantage of China’s economic largess for its own benefits. |
