Item Planning and Organization of a Conference by Dr. Olivier Le Guen (Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology
Details As part of the activities of the Center for Latin American Studies at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, I organized a conference by Dr. Olivier Le Guen, a professor at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology, on the topic of 'The Books of Chilam Balam: Content, Form, and Their Use by Mayan Scribes in the Christianization of Their World'. He explained that the Maya scribes did not simply compile The Book of Chilam Balam to preserve pre-Columbian memories, but rather created a new text by selecting and reorganizing content from existing texts. They sometimes introduced morphological innovations or blended genres in order to respond to the spread of Christianity.
